Meet the Artist: Aunty Lorni Hyland

Lorni Hyland (Tribal Name: Minocobrinni, the Pelican; Title: Tubbonooan) was a proud Brabralung Woman from South East Gippsland. She was born in Horsham, Victoria, and her totem was the Emu Wren (Yeerung).

Lorni spent her childhood on the Lake Tyres (Bung Yarnda) mission by the sea, growing up surrounded by her community. Over two decades, she became a celebrated artist and cultural storyteller, known for sharing Dreaming stories through her work.

Her achievements were widely recognised. She received:

  • The 1993 Excellence in Business/Profession Award
  • The 1996 Arts & Culture Award
  • The 1999 Dhuubuu Koori Arts – Cultural Achiever of the Year

One of her most iconic works, Bar painting, was purchased by Annita Keating, wife of then Prime Minister Paul Keating, for display in Parliament House, Canberra.

Aunty Lorni passed away in August 2002, but her legacy lives on through her art.
